SCORPIONS Blacked Out In Vegas w/ QUEENSRYCHE - Hair Metal Mansion Coverage

Hair Metal Mansion correspondent JOE SCHAEFFER checks in with the following:

The Scorpions opened a five night residency at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on 5/13/2016. The band are made up of longtime members Klaus Meine (vocals), Rudolf Schenker (rhythm guitar) and Matthias Jabs (lead guitar), alongside Paweł Mąciwoda (bass) and Mikkey Dee (drums) who is filling in for James Kottak.

The evening started with progressive metal pioneers Queensrÿche who ripped through a set of classic tracks along with set opener ‘Guardian’ from their current release ‘Condition Human‘. It was an absolutely stellar performance from the band. It’s great to hear ‘Queen of the Reich’ sung by lead vocalist Todd La Torre. He brings a renewed vigor to the band. Longtime drummer Scott Rockenfeld was as thunderous as ever, and the twin guitar attack of original member Michael Wilton and Parker Lundgren was ferocious.

Up next, headline act and Germany's most famous hard rock exports, the Scorpions, who are celebrating 50 years as a band with a hits-packed set of their trademark melodic hard rock.

Three songs from their latest album ‘Return to Forever’ were featured in the night's set (opener 'Going Out With A Bang' along with lead single 'We Built This House' and 'Rock and Roll Band') and slotted in with ease alongside classics like 'The Zoo,', 'Coast to Coast,' and 'Big City Nights.' The highlight for me was the ’70s tracks consisting of ‘Top of the Bill,’ ‘Steamrock Fever,’ ‘Speedy’s Coming’ and ‘Catch Your Train.’

Of course, it was the super hits that the crowd had really been waiting for the most, and the Scorpions brought them out. ‘Wind of Change,’ and ‘Still Loving You’ had everyone in the venue singing along, while ‘Dynamite,’ ‘No One Like You,’ and ‘Blackout’ had every fist in the air and further explained exactly how they have lasted so long. By the time the band wrapped up their set with “Rock You Like A Hurricane,” it was clear that even after fifty years, the Scorpions still know what it takes to deliver a big time rock show.
