First Ever SiriusXM Hair Nation Festival Hits Southern California

Hair Metal Mansion correspondent Joe Schaeffer checks in with the following:

Hair Metal Mansion had the pleasure to cover the first ever Sirius XM Hair Nation Festival. The day-long rock festival celebrated the 80’s and early 90’s Hard Rock scene with band performances on two stages, artist signings, VIP Meet and Greets, vendor booths and even go-go dancers. Hair Nation also was on site for band interviews as well as live broadcasts with some of the bands.

The music began on the main stage with The Aviators, the winner of the Hair Nation local Battle of the Bands event held in August at the World Famous Whisky a Go-Go. Battle  runner up Electric Hound began the action on the Festival Stage. It was virtually impossible to cover both stages with the set times that were given.  I was able to shoot 20 of the 22 bands this year. After The Aviators tore up to the Main Stage, Tuff and Vain performed their sets thereafter. The Festival Stage was cookin’ with the return of 80’s metal veterans Odin. Each of the early bands was given roughly a 30 minute set. It was non-stop entertainment on the Main Stage with a revolving stage to guarantee the show would run on time. As the show with Vain came to a close, out came Britney Fox with a hard rockin’ set that did not disappoint. Chris Sanders even smashed a couple of guitars prior to their show. Junkyard, Bullet Boys and Enuff Z’Nuff would all follow with solid sets as well.  Next up was Faster Pussycat with Purr…fect’ top form lead singer Taime Downe. “House of Pain” is always a great song to hear live.  One of the highlights for me was next with the return to Southern California of Janet Gardner and the ladies of Vixen bringing the crowd to its feet with a hard drivin’ set of all their hits.

Other acts performing at the Festival Stage included Gabbie Rae with her stunning vocal talent, Circus of Power followed but veteran Hair Band rockers Bang Tango and Pretty Boy Floyd.

As the Festival Stage music came to a close LA Guns’ Phil Lewis and Tracii Guns performed what was for me the most anticipated set of the evening. They were joined by current LA Guns lead guitarist Michael Grant, Johnny Martin on bass, Shane Fitzgibbon on drums and Walter Ino on Keyboards performing “Killing Machine” as the set opener followed by hits that made the band famous.

Back once again to the main stage was Lita Ford who delivered her high energy brand of rock. Eddie Trunk the event host came out with a cake to help Lita celebrate her birthday. Then Slaughter… followed by  Yngwie Malmsteen who included his two biggest hits “Rising Force” and “Heaven Tonight”.

Kix took the stage mixing it up with past hits as well as songs from their current CD greeted by most enthusiastic crowd delivering one of the best sets of the night. Up next on the main stage was Bret Michaels performing the longest set of the night. Poison songs a plenty were on tap for his show. Vince Neil ended the night with all the Motley Crue hits you have come to know and love.

I think all the fans in attendance had a memorable experience. I for one am hoping it becomes a yearly festival for us in Southern California. Eddie Trunk hinted they would like to do it again next year. Unfortunately it won’t be at Irvine Meadows which is scheduled to close at the end of October.
